Dr. Ghaheri’s clinical interest is helping babies with breastfeeding difficulties. This desire stems from personal experiences, where both of his daughters had significant problems breastfeeding. He is one of the only ENT surgeons in the US who uses an in-office laser treatment for assisting babies to latch on to the breast, in addition to treating older children and adults for certain dental and speech issues.

Surgical release of tongue/lip-tie results in significant improvement in breastfeeding outcomes. Improvements occur early (1-week postoperatively) and continue to improve through 1-month postoperatively. Improvements were demonstrated in both infants with classic anterior tongue-tie and less obvious posterior tongue-tie. This study identifies a previously under-recognized patient population that may benefit from surgical intervention if abnormal breastfeeding symptoms exist.
Dr. Hazelbaker has 30 years of experience specializing in cross-disciplinary treatments using specialized training in several modalities to best assist her clients. She is a certified Craniosacral Therapist, a Lymph Drainage Therapy practitioner, and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Earning her Master’s Degree in Human Development specializing in Human Lactation from Pacific Oaks College, Dr. Hazelbaker received her doctorate in Psychology from The Union Institute and University. Her original research on tongue-tie, in 1993, has changed clinical practice both in the USA and abroad. She authored the Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (ATLFF) which remains the only research-based tongue-tie screening process in infants under 6 months. Recently, Dr. Hazelbaker revised her Master’s thesis on tongue-tie into a comprehensive book on the condition titled: Tongue-tie: Morphogenesis, Impact, Assessment and Treatment published by Aidan and Eva Press. Melissa Cole, IBCLC, RLC is a board certified lactation consultant and neonatal oral-motor assessment professional in private practice. Melissa has been passionate about providing comprehensive, holistic lactation care and education to parents and healthcare professionals for over a decade. She is an adjunct professor at Birthingway College of Midwifery in Portland, OR where she teaches advanced clinical lactation skills. She is active with several lactation and health care professional associations. Melissa lives and works in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

There are a few emerging theories and clinical practice ideas when it comes to frenotomy aftercare for the newborn. Clinicians and families sometimes struggle with the idea of how to balance efficient post-frenotomy care while minimizing stress and discomfort of the newborn. While the evidence strongly points to the benefit of frenotomy for tongue-tied neonates, there is little published evidence regarding best aftercare practices. During this presentation we will explore the neonatal experience of pain along with pain management and oral healing strategies. We will also discuss the impact of stress on wound healing and focus on ways to help keep babies calm and happy through the recovery process. For families coping with a tongue-tied baby, it is often a physical and emotional roller coaster ride. This presentation will help provide a well-rounded view of frenotomy aftercare issues as well as clinical, care strategies to optimize healing and feeding for the newborn.
Dr. Siegel is a pioneering Tongue Tie surgeon, mentored through medical school, residency and in private by practice by the late Elizabeth Coryllos, MD. He is a dual degree MD, DDS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, lectures internationally and publishes on the topic of Reflux associated with Lip and Tongue Ties.
Objective 1: Discuss pathophysiology of infantile reflux vs Aerophagia Induced Reflux (AIR) Objective 2:Describe role of lip/tongue tie in aerophagia induced reflux (AIR) Objective 3: Explain treatment with frenotomy/frenectomy for AIR.
This study aims to show a correlation between aerophagia in infants with tethered oral tissues (TOT’s) consisting of ankyloglossia and shortened maxillary labial frenula (tongue and lip-tie) and reflux. Currently there is little to no data on aerophagia as a possible cause of reflux in infants. Infants with tongue and possibly lip tie often have a poor latch in which there is often an inadequate seal around the breast and inefficient transfer of milk. As a result many of these infants swallow air during breastfeeding. Many of these infants suffer from symptoms of reflux. This study and results to demonstrate a correlation of ankyloglossia and shortened maxillary labial frenula with aerophagia and reflux.Treatment of these infants with a relatively simple frentomy procedure may reduce or eliminate reflux in this population.
Autumn R. Henning, MS, CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Kentucky with her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Communication Disorders. Autumn is a recognized provider by Ankyloglossia Bodyworkers, has been a guest presenter for Creating a Care Plan for Tongue Ties and delivered a webinar through Innara Health entitled Tethered Oral Tissues: What’s a Therapist to do?. She has served on local breastfeeding professional panels and delivered numerous presentations to parents and medical professionals. Autumn has completed specialty continuing education including Beckman Oral Motor, Vital Stim, and Foundations in Myofascial Release for Neck, Voice, and Swallowing as well more than a dozen professional courses on pediatric feeding and related topics. She is pursuing further education in the areas of lactation and orofacial myology. Autumn has experience working in the school system, early intervention, an ABA center and outpatient clinics including a nationally award-winning intensive feeding program. Autumn currently specializes in pediatric feeding at a non-profit outpatient clinic in Greenville, SC and serves on the board. She recently founded a continuing education company, Chrysalis Feeding, LLC. The flagship course is TOTS: Tethered Oral Tissues Specialty Training that launched this Fall.

This presentation is an introduction to tethered oral tissues and their impact on oral function beyond breastfeeding. Participants will learn about the oral skills necessary for proper speech and solid feeding and how tethered oral tissues alter this optimal function. Participants will learn how to effectively communicate with patients, families, and other medical professionals on this topic and make appropriate referrals with recognition of signs and symptoms affecting oral function.

Starting this fall, GOLD Learning is introducing a new series of live, one-day events. The GOLD Learning Online Symposiums will focus on a particular topic or area of practice within the field of maternal-child health. As with all of our educational offerings, the presentations will be accredited, and the symposiums are designed to provide evidence-based education about current research, initiatives and clinical practices. A great opportunity to get needed continuing education credits or just to get your GOLD fix between conferences! The series will start in September with our first Symposium on Childbirth Education followed by our Tongue-tie Research and Implications Symposium.

How much time do I have to view the presentations?
