Abstract:

Our work with clients involves so much more than simply an in-depth knowledge of lactation. Higher level counselling skills are imperative in allowing our clients to move forward with confidence. We may know exactly what is needed in order for them to achieve 'lactation success', but they don't follow through in the way they had originally committed, or in the way we expect. Additionally, knowing what is needed for them to reach their goal might be entirely contradictory to what they actually feel capable of managing in their daily life – and this can be a very frustrating place for us to navigate as their lactation consultant. This presentation is for anyone who has ever felt frustration at their client's unwillingness to simply 'follow the plan', and for those who feel stuck for the right words during tricky conversations regarding a client's lactation goals. Uncover ways to create space for vulnerability, to anticipate and confront possible barriers, and to straddle the very complex and ever-moving line of a client's perception of success or of failure.

Learning Objectives:

1 Explain three ways in which we can structure and adapt conversations to allow clients to take ownership of their care plan.

2 Recite two techniques to use when we feel a client's goals contradict their actions or capabilities.

3 Describe how to utilise and adapt scripts for difficult planning conversations during consultations.
