Abstract:

The military is a unique culture and breastfeeding in the military presents specific barriers and challenges not found in any other workplace or culture. This presentation will provide an overview of breastfeeding statistics and practices within the military, including challenges breastfeeding military mothers face (deployments, HAZMAT), case studies of successful military breastfeeding dyads, and what type of support is needed for mothers in this male-dominated culture to be successful.

Objective 1: Understand the overall impact of women in the military and how it relates to breastfeeding

Objective 2: Define the policies and regulations regarding breastfeeding in the military

Objective 3: Define the barriers and challenges of breastfeeding in the military, and identify strategies to support breastfeeding mothers in the military
