Abstract:
The abdominal assessment provides crucial data for the neonatal provider regarding physiologic function, readiness to feed, as well as clues to major organ anomalies or genetic syndromes. Alterations in the neonatal abdominal exam can be a result of genetic, environmental, and maternal factors. In this module we define frequently used abdominal terminology, explain abdominal anatomy and physiology, describe the process of a neonatal abdominal exam, and list common neonatal abdominal conditions.
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1: Define frequently used abdominal terminology;
Objective 2: Explain abdominal anatomy and physiology;
Objective 3: Describe the process of a neonatal abdominal exam;
Objective 4: List common neonatal abdominal conditions.
