An Algorithm For Physiological Breech Birth

by Shawn Walker, RM, PhD
  • Duration: 60 Mins
  • Credits:
  • Handout: Yes
Abstract:

This presentation will present an algorithm to assist with decision-making around complicated breech births where the mother is birthing in an upright position, e.g. kneeling, standing, hands/knees. The algorithm is based on video analysis research. It includes recommended timings to determine if the birth requires assistance and suggests maneuvers to help in various situations. The algorithm will be explained alongside explanations of the maneuvers.

Learning Objectives:

Following this Session, participants will be able to:

Objective 1: Identify the length of time normally expected between the birth of a baby’s pelvis and the aftercoming head;

Objective 2: Determine if an aftercoming arm has entered the pelvis and is trapped alongside the head, or is trapped at the inlet to the pelvis; and

Objective 3: Determine if an aftercoming head is trapped in the mid-pelvis or pelvic inlet.
