Mastering Lactation Conversations: Creating Successful and Achievable Care Plans

In celebration of IBCLC Day 2024, GOLD Learning is excited to welcome Johanna Sargeant BA, BEd, IBCLC as she shares her presentation titled "Mastering Lactation Conversations: Creating Successful and Achievable Care Plans". Johanna is passionate about utilising her background in education, biological science, psychology and language to empower parents with empathetic support and evidence-based information. Originally from Australia, Johanna provides much-needed English-speaking support to many thousands of parents throughout Switzerland and across Europe and has recently been writing new education modules for the European Society of Pediatric Research and the European Society of Neonatology. She has taught at the University of Zurich and has spoken as a panelist for the WHO's Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative congress in Geneva.

Our work with clients involves so much more than simply an in-depth knowledge of lactation. Higher level knowledge of how to approach counselling is imperative for allowing our clients to move forward with confidence. This presentation is for anyone who has ever felt frustration at their client's unwillingness to simply 'follow the plan', and for those who feel stuck for the right words during tricky conversations regarding a client's lactation goals. Uncover ways to create space for vulnerability, to anticipate and confront possible barriers, and to straddle the very complex and ever-moving line of a client's perception of success or of failure. Join us for an exciting hour of education that you won't find anywhere else!

This presentation recording is now online and is approved for 1 L-CERP.

Abstract:

Our work with clients involves so much more than simply an in-depth knowledge of lactation. Higher level counselling skills are imperative in allowing our clients to move forward with confidence. We may know exactly what is needed in order for them to achieve 'lactation success', but they don't follow through in the way they had originally committed, or in the way we expect. Additionally, knowing what is needed for them to reach their goal might be entirely contradictory to what they actually feel capable of managing in their daily life – and this can be a very frustrating place for us to navigate as their lactation consultant.
