The mission of the VA-ACNM is to support midwives and advance the practice of midwifery in order to educate, empower, and achieve optimal health for women throughout their lifespan. VA-ACNM supports the practice of midwifery by promoting education, research, and advocacy that advances clinical excellence, expansion of a diverse midwifery workforce, and equitable legislation, regulation, and institutional policies that establish midwifery as the standard of care for women.

Obesity is a significant co-morbidity for pregnant people in the US. However, some of the outcome that people may experience during pregnancy and birth maybe contributed to inadequate or ineffective care. This presentation explorers current evidence and presents recommendation or caring for people with obesity to improve wellness, optimal birth outcomes, and promote respectful care.

Reducing Primary Cesarean: Supporting Physiologic Progress in Labor

The Affiliate hosts the Potpourri every Fall to bring together midwives, women's health practitioners, students, and consumer advocates to network and learn together on topics related to providing evidence-based, person-centered gynecologic and pregnancy care.

Cesarean birth in the United States occurs in over 30% of nulliparous births. This is higher than rates recommended by the World Health Organization and current evidence suggests that a significant number are unnecessary and preventable. The Healthy Birth Initiative: Reducing Primary Cesarean Collaborative aims to reduce unnecessary Cesarean and promote physiologic birth through implementation of safety bundles. This presentation discusses the work of the collaborative and bundle implementation and presents the work of a participating hospital and their outcomes through the first 18 months.

Menopause is a normal life event that occurs in twin as they age. Care includes promotion of health and wellness in this season and treatment of symptoms associated with decreased ovarian production of estrogen. In this presentation, recommended guidelines for overall health and wellness screening will be reviewed and best treatment options for people experiencing symptoms of menopause and pearls for practice will be shared.
