Dr. Erik Bauer completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, medical school at University of Michigan, and otolaryngology residency and pediatric fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He joined Pediatric Ear, Nose & Throat of Atlanta in 2006. In practice, Dr. Bauer has developed a special interest in tongue and lip ties, especially as they affect infant breastfeeding. He feels fortunate to have expanded his knowledge of this previously under-recognized issue, and to have the opportunity to help many infants and moms navigate this challenging territory. Allowing babies to feed more comfortably and effectively has turned out to be one of the most rewarding aspects of his practice. Sekesa Berry is a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), accredited through the Academy of Lactation and Policy Practices. She worked over three and a half years counseling, teaching and supporting families as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. She is currently contracted as a Lactation Consultant for both OB/Gyn and Midwifery practices. Her knowledge and experience of breastfeeding support are essential for correcting issues that may arise during the postpartum period. She has extensive experience with helping families to overcome breastfeeding challenges such as: painful breastfeeding; engorgement and oversupply; oral restrictions such as tongue and lip tie; breast milk supply issues; and pump management.
Tongue and lip ties, how they may affect breast feeding, and how to recognize and treat them, have become a hot topic in pediatrics and allied specialties. In this session, we will discuss the anatomy and mechanics of the latch and the infant and maternal factors that can affect it. We'll address risks and benefits of treatment of tongue and lip ties, strategies to achieve and maintain breastfeeding success after frenulectomy procedures, and other factors that may influence or limit results.
