Biography:

Kate T. Finn, MS, LM is owner of a private midwifery home birth practice in Ithaca, New York. An activist midwife, Kate is working to engender integration of home birth within the maternity system by developing of models of collaboration. Working with her Regional Perinatal Center, coordination of transfers from home births was promoted in educational outreach to 19 affiliated hospitals. A delegate to three national Home Birth Summits, Kate is active on the multi-stakeholder Collaboration Task Force which released Best Practice Guidelines: Transfers from Planned Home Birth to Hospital in 2014. Kate serves on the board of the New York State Association of Licensed Midwives, where Kate chairs the Quality Committee and the Home Birth Integration Initiative, which developed consensus Guidelines for Planned Home Birth in NY, released in 2015. Kate is currently developing an outreach program and materials promoting integration of planned home birth to maternity hospitals across New York.

Engendering System Integration of Home Birth through a Quality Narrative and Guidelines for Collaboration
For families choosing childbirth at home, policy and research literature highlights the importance of integrated access to a maternity system that facilitates consultation and transfer to hospital care when necessary. A strategic policy framework is described in terms of a "quality and safety bundle" for integration of planned home birth.
