The scope of breastfeeding support continues well beyond the breastfeeding family. Extended family, caregivers, workplaces, and the community all fall under the umbrella of needing education and support if families are to be successful in meeting their breastfeeding goals. Lactation advocates can learn and demonstrate leadership skills to create lasting change on the community level. Framing community breastfeeding education as a public health strategy can allow us to look for opportunities in childhood initiatives, mental health programs, social interventions, and more!
