To change a behavior, an individual needs to answer two questions: “Is it worth it?” and “Can I do it?” Too often, in breastfeeding, we stop with one question, and then wonder why our intervention doesn’t work. This talk will explore the Six Sources of Influence that determine whether efforts to change behavior succeed or fail. We’ll talk about why efforts that tackle at least 4 sources are 11 times more likely to succeed than those that take a narrow approach, and we’ll apply this framework to changing behavior of individual mothers, their social networks, and the health professionals, employers and policy makers that affect each mother-baby dyad. This talk will give you the tools to integrate multiple sources of influence into all of our efforts to support mothers and babies.
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1: Identify sociological influences on breastfeeding
