"When the Same Thing Happened to Me" - Self-Disclosure and Personal Experience in Lactation Counseling
In celebration of IBCLC Day 2025, GOLD Learning is excited to welcome Rebecca Costello, IBCLC, MPH as she shares her presentation titled "When the Same Thing Happened to Me" - Self-Disclosure and Personal Experience in Lactation Counseling. As lactation professionals, we come from a variety of professional and peer counseling backgrounds. And as humans, we each bring to the field a range of personal experiences that will intersect with our clients in a variety of ways. Rebecca began her lactation journey with her undergraduate senior thesis evaluating a breastfeeding education program. After working as a doula and childbirth educator, she decided to pursue a Master’s in Public Health in Maternal and Child Health. There, she was also in the first class of the Mary Rose Tully Training Initiative, a Pathway 2 IBCLC training program. After graduating, she first worked full time as an IBCLC in a large academic hospital. She then became the Director of Lactation Services at a busy freestanding birth center. After making the move to a new state, she went into private practice part-time, and expanded her focus on a longtime passion: providing education for IBCLCs, lactation trainees, and health care providers. She also has special interests in research, support for the LGBTQ+ community, and coalition-building to advance and support IBCLC services.
Topic: Leveling up Your Note Taking - [View Abstract]
1. List at least two benefits and two risks of provider self-disclosure in patient care.
2. Define at least 4 types of provider self-disclosure statements.
3. Describe how to set and maintain personal boundaries in lactation counseling and care.
As lactation professionals, we come from a variety of professional and peer counseling backgrounds. And as humans, we each bring to the field a range of personal experiences that will intersect with our clients in a variety of ways: our family histories, medical experiences, cultural backgrounds, and more. Drawing on these can enrich our patient care by giving us unique insights into what a patient or their family may be feeling or needing, and disclosing our own experiences to our patients may provide connection and support. But it can also obscure our judgment, lead us to incorrect assumptions, and affect how patients view our clinical care and recommendations.
In this talk, we will review what the evidence says on the effects of clinician self-disclosure on patient trust and outcomes. Then we will reflect on our own histories and become more aware of how those affect our thinking; and discuss approaches for how to develop your own boundaries and approach to patient counseling. This talk is for all lactation professionals, regardless of whether you have personal lactation experience!
