Abstract:

There is often some confusion and skepticism regarding the treatment methods of manual therapies and in particular Osteopathy. The principles of Osteopathic Medicine were discovered over 100 years ago by Dr A T still, a Medical Doctor and Surgeon. This presentation aims to outline the key principles of Osteopathy that will enable a clearer understanding of how anatomy and physiology are addressed in relation to structure and function of the human body. The application of Osteopathic Medicine will be discussed in particular to the pregnant woman and the immediate postnatal period. The research surrounding osteopathy will be discussed and some thought provoking theories around common compensatory patterns in the newborn. Abdominal palpation and the birthing process will be touched on in relation to newborn discomforts. The presentation will be thought provoking and will highlight areas of research that are well overdue for both osteopathic medicine, and the care of the newborn within midwifery.

Objective 1: Approach potential causes of dystocia throughout pregnancy;
Objective 2: Assess for pelvic imbalance in pregnancy;
Objective 3: Model their care from the salutogenic model.

Abstract:

In pregnancy, a woman’s body experiences numerous musculoskeletal adaptations and physiological changes. These changes often have an adverse effect on her neuro-biomechanics adversely affecting quality of life, birth outcome and the future well-being of her baby.

The doctor of chiropractic plays a vital role correcting spinal misalignments (subluxations). By restoring nerve system function with these specific spinal adjustments, the mother’s neuro-biomechanical function is improved. This results in an improved quality of life throughout pregnancy, and a body more equipped for optimal physiological function in birth.

This paper will discuss addressing the neuro-biomechanics in pregnancy, the causes of dystocia and the integrative care of birth providers to lead to a safer, easier birth for mothers and babies.

The Herbal Education of Midwives
United States Susan Weed, Author

To fully support their clients’ health throughout gestation, birth, and nursing, midwives need to know about herbs. Not a lot; in fact, what most midwives need to know can be learned in few hours. Wise use of herbs is especially important during pregnancy and lactation. Using herbs instead of drugs to allay problems protects both mom and fetus from harm. Even more importantly, the abundant nutrition available from select herbs – like stinging nettle, oatstraw, comfrey leaf, and red clover blossoms–has a much more profound influence on maternal health than any supplement and can make the difference between an easy birth and a complicated one. Herbal medicine is simple, safe, and effective at all times in a woman’s life, including during her childbearing years. Here are the things I think it most important that a midwife know about herbs and herbal medicine.

Objective 1: Show participants how to make and use nourishing herbal infusions;
Objective 2: Show participants how to make and use simple herbal teas;
Objective 3: Show participants how to make and use herbal oils and ointments;
Objective 4: Show participants how to make and use simple herbal tinctures.
