Abstract:
Sources of information for prescription and nonprescription galactogogue use during breastfeeding will be presented and reviewed. Potential adverse effects in children of mothers who are breastfeeding and taking galactogogue medications will be reviewed and discussed. Various herbals that are used as galactogogues will be identified. Using the material presented, healthcare professionals will be able to counsel mothers who are breastfeeding and taking or will take galactogogue products (prescription, over-the counter, herbal, and complimentary).
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify sources of information for herbal and pharmaceutical galactogogue use during breastfeeding
2. Describe adverse effects in children of mothers and mothers who are breastfeeding and taking herbal or pharmaceutical galactogogues.
Be able to identify herbal and pharmaceutical galactogogues that are usually safe to take while breastfeeding.
3. Counsel mothers who are breastfeeding and taking or will take herbal or pharmaceutical galactogogues.
