Miranda Buck, (RN(Paeds), BA(Hons), MPhil, IBCLC), has been a paediatric nurse since 1995 and has a background in neonatal and paediatric intensive care nursing. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Judith Lumley Centre and a lactation consultant at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. She also enjoys teaching into the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programs as a visiting lecturer. Miranda is noted for her enthusiasm for evidence based care and an approach which draws on anthropological and developmental theories. Her particular research interests are breastfeeding difficulties, online peer support and breastfeeding in the neonatal intensive care unit. She lives in Melbourne with her daughters, Esme, seven and Sylvie, four.

Abstract:

This presentation, an excerpt from a longer training course, outlines the most valuable information on the use of essential oils during each phase of maternity and in infant care. Participants will come away feeling capable in their understanding of the safe and effective clinical use of essential oils as well as their various applications, individual properties, dosages, and contraindications during maternity. Essential oils may seem like old news, but access to therapeutic-quality oils and French methods of application have brought this ancient health practice to a whole new level of popularity. Course content is substantiated by current, peer-reviewed research.

She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in the Divisions of Health and Trauma Psychology, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Amarillo, Texas, and Research Associate at the Crimes against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. She is Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Lactation,and a founding Associate Editor of Psychological Trauma. She received (with Tom Hale) the 2011 John Kennell and Marshall Klaus Award for Excellence in Research from DONA International.

Abstract:

Working in perinatal care can be deeply rewarding. It can also lead to job-related burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Secondary traumatic stress, or compassion fatigue, can occur when witnessing traumatic events in the workplace. This can occur when witnessing infant death or traumatic births, or when there is too much work, or work that doesn’t seem to make a difference, and little institutional support. A recent survey by AWHONN of 464 Labor & Delivery nurses found that more than a third reported moderate-to-severe symptoms of traumatic stress as a result of incidents they encountered on the job. This has serious implications for both patients and providers. Burnout and Compassion fatigue/secondary traumatic stress can lead to physical and mental health sequelae for professionals who experiences them. It can also have a negative impact on the care provided. Self-care is essential for being able to provide care to others. In this seminar, participants will learn about the causes and consequences of both burnout and secondary traumatic stress/compassion fatigue. The good news is that there is hope for recovery. Participants will learn some specific strategies for integrating self-care into their care for others.

Kathy Parkes is a registered nurse, IBCLC, and Fellow of the International Lactation Consultant Association (FILCA) with over 30 years of experience in lactation management and education.  She has been actively involved with breastfeeding coalitions at the local, state, and international levels.  Now a published author, her first book, “Perspectives in Lactation: Is Private Practice for Me?”, sold out the first printing in only 48 hours.  Kathy has worked in multiple lactation settings, including the hospital, private practice, education, home health care, and in the US-based Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) program.  As a Certified Compassion Fatigue Educator, Kathy heads the Perinatal Loss Program at her hospital, and leads a Griefshare program in the community.  Happily married for 39 years, she has 2 daughters, and 3 grandchildren, all breastfed.

Physicians, nurses, midwives, birth workers, and lactation consultants are continuously providing care to others, and many of these give more than they receive. Doing so puts them at higher risk for compassion fatigue. There are research-based methods to assess, prevent, treat, and cope with compassion fatigue. This session will discuss compassion fatigue, professional burn-out, secondary trauma stress, and ways to take care of yourself in the process of caring for others.

Jill Bergman qualified from University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1983 with a degree and post graduate teachers diploma. She has taught in Zimbabwe and South Africa and lectured at a teachers training college.

She has supported her husband Dr Nils Bergman in Kangaroo Mother Care since he started in 1988, and in a full-time capacity since 2000. She has made 4 films and written a book- Hold Your Prem- for parents of premature babies, all making the neuroscience that Nils teaches applicable in practice and translating care into non-technical language.. She has a passion for supporting mothers in labour as a doula and as a kangaroula speaking for the needs of newborns, empowering mums and babies with early bonding and breastfeeding. She trains nursing staff and hospitals in the practicalities of skin to skin contact, and developmental care. She and Nils have three super youngsters,two just finished university.

She owns MotherJourney, focusing on training perinatal professionals on integrative and holistic information regarding pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. She has her degree in Maternal Child Health: Lactation Consulting and is an internationally board certified lactation consultant. Wilson is the co-author of two books, The Attachment Pregnancy and The Greatest Pregnancy Ever. She loves to blend today’s recent scientific findings with the mind/body/spirit wisdom. Laurel has been joyfully married to her husband for more than two decades and has two wonderful grown sons, whose difficult births led her on a path towards helping emerging families create positive experiences. The relationship between breastfeeding and postpartum mood disorders has long been challenging for healthcare providers to completely understand. While the mental and sometimes physical challenges, as well as PMAD medications, can affect the breastfeeding relationship, the importance of continuing breastfeeding for the long-term genetic physical and mental health of the child is only now just beginning to be fully understood. Epigenetics, the environmental influence and expression of the genome, can be impacted by the breastmilk, the physical act of breastfeeding, and physical interaction between mother and child. During this presentation, you will develop an understanding of epigenetics, the role of breastmilk and breastfeeding behavior and our genes, and the epigenetic link that the past and future has to our mothering behaviors in the present.

Abstract:

More than 90% of Victorian mothers initiate breastfeeding but the number of women breastfeeding their babies decreases quickly.During the first two days of life more than half of women experience problems with latching and feeding their babies.By three months of age only half of Victorian babies are fully breastfed. In a survey of 729 Australian women with gestational diabetes 97% reported ‘ever’ breastfeeding but only 19% had breastfed for ≤ 3 months.A combination of lack of effective support and incorrect advice often results in women experiencing breastfeeding problems.Our study of first time mothers found that 80% experienced nipple pain in the early weeks and 60% had nipple damage.

Babies are capable of effective breastfeeding, but too often their innate abilities are disrupted by hospital practices. In this session I will explain how I work with new mothers and their babies to overcome the disruptions of medicalised births and allow babies to breastfeed themselves. Using illustrations and examples from practice I will provide midwives with tools to support breastfeeding in birthsuite and the early hours following birth. I will show how applying the science of neonatal behaviour helps us to understand what new mother baby dyads need to transition to successful breastfeeding. This session will translate research into practice and demonstrate how we can transform outcomes for mothers and babies with small changes in practice in the first 24 hours after birth.

Her original research on tongue-tie, in 1993, has changed clinical practice both in the USA and abroad. She authored the Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (ATLFF) which remains the only research-based tongue-tie screening process in infants under 6 months. Dr. Kimberly Thompson is a licensed psychologist in Texas. She works with people across the life span, but the majority of her clinical work centers around the special concerns of women and children.
Dr. Thompson is a published researcher, author, and teacher. She teaches in the Infant & Early Childhood Development Ph.D. program, Fielding Graduate University, and has recently authored “Perfect Mothers Get Depressed,” a book on the cognitive and relational roots of postpartum depression.
Dr. Thompson has been married to Dr. Charles D. Thompson, an obstetrician-gynecologist, since 1985. The two Drs. Thompson have four children and one grandchild.

We will explore how dysfunctional thought patterns and habitual ways of being in relationships, based on life experiences, contribute to a woman’s approach to motherhood and the development of postpartum depression.
